Dr. Ernie Ward sets out to show just how cold it gets in a dog house at night. He’s a firm believer that if this video can save the life of one animal, then it was worth it for him to subject himself to the experiment. Only a half hour in at 25 degrees Fahrenheit, he’s already experiencing bits of shivering. And above his head on the ceiling of the dog house, he notices ice crystals are forming. An hour in he says, “At this level, for a prolonged exposure, no dog is biologically adapted to handle this.”

After four hours in the dog house, it’s down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, and Dr. Ward’s hands are completely numb and he’s experiencing a lot of uncontrolled shivering. 

I think he says it best with this line: “Our responsibility is to provide the best quality of life for the animals we love and cherish — and this ain’t it!”

And when she heard about Holly through her business’ veterinary partner, she had to take her in even though the home was full. 

A man brought the senior dog in to be euthanized because he “didn’t want to take care of her anymore,” and the vet refused to put the sweet dog down. Holly was around 10 to 12 years old and super friendly with a lot of life left to give. Her original owner passed away, and she was shuffled from home to home until she finally settled with her current family. 

And they no longer wanted her because they already had two other dogs and claimed Holly would pee on the floor. The grandkids were also not interested in her. “I don’t like to pick on children, but the granddaughter looked at me and shrugged – ‘We just don’t really like her. We like our other dogs better.’ Meanwhile, the dog stood there, wagging and wagging and wagging her tail,” Melissa commented. 

Holly is in good shape overall but still a little scared and confused in life. She just recently learned to relax a bit as Melissa wraps her in blankets to snuggle often. The dog’s getting that love she deserves.

When Holly is completely healed both physically and mentally, Melissa will help find her a forever home where she’ll be spoiled for the rest of her life. For Melissa, the dream then continues on as another spot in her rescue opens up to save yet another elderly dog in need.

It turned out the hound mix was a talented escape artist, and he would constantly run away from his new home and end up back at the shelter. The CAS staff finally realized he was trying to tell them something… Gumby quickly became known around the Charleston area for his Houdini-like escaping skills after arriving to the no-kill shelter in 2014. The shelter did everything they could to try to find Gumby a forever home, but he kept ending up back at the shelter. 

He showed back up at their doorstep 11 times throughout the year. They didn’t know what to do. His first adoption only lasted three days. The next one, just six. The staff started to warn every family about the dog’s tremendous ability to escape, and the third adopter was determined to make it work. But the Hound was returned to CAS four more times. On one occasion, a Good Samaritan found Gumby and brought him in. Another time, it was animal control. He was brought back by his adopter two more times. In March of 2015, Gumby was adopted by his fourth family. The shelter hadn’t heard anything about him for four months, and they thought this was it — he’d finally found his forever home. Then in July, Gumby was returned as a stray once again. Gumby was adopted for a fifth time in August, this time ending up at a sister shelter of CAS nearly 30 miles away. Back to CAS he went only to be returned by his sixth adopter shortly after. In December of 2015, they gave it one more try. Gumby was adopted, but like always, it didn’t last long. 

The adopter said the dog escaped three times in a month, one of those times busting through the screen door! The Charleston Animal Society finally gave up on trying to find Gumby a forever home. What they hadn’t realized is that he had a home this entire time — at the shelter. 

Gumby loved the attention given to him by the staff and was comfortable right where he was. He was happy and wanted to stay. Gumby has always had an uncanny way of comforting the anxious and fearful dogs at the shelter, and they felt like part of him wanting to stay was the fact that he had work left to do. Gumby officially became part of the shelter and was even given the title of General Manager. He’d help the team with behavioral demonstrations in addition to playing with the other dogs and spreading his love. The staff may have put an end to trying to find Gumby an adopter, but they never gave up on him. It’s not a traditional home, but the shelter is the place Gumby has always wanted to be. He’s found his purpose in life. 🙂 Additionally, the staff recently discovered that the serum from Gumby’s blood has healing properties. He’s now a blood donor for kittens with eye infections! Just another reason Gumby fits in perfectly at the Charleston Animal Society. We couldn’t be happier for him!

When Ghost first came to the shelter, he was in terrible shape. His leg was causing a full-body infection that required blood and plasma transfusions. Unable to lift his head, the tiny puppy was placed on the euthanasia list. 

However, the staff at the shelter refused to give up on him, and they amputated his leg to save his life. To everyone’s surprise, Ghost recovered quickly. In “true Pit Bull fashion,” he was up and running within 24 hours of his surgery. 

Although he was still healing, Ghost didn’t let his missing leg hold him back. He was determined to live life to the fullest, joining the rest of the pack at Pebbles Plantation and enjoying the company of other dogs. At the plantation, Ghost quickly made friends with the other special needs animals, including goats and horses. 

His foster mom noticed his potential to be an amazing advocate for not only his breed but also for people with disabilities. She knew it would be hard to let him go to his forever home, but she also recognized the impact he could have on others. When a military veteran first saw Ghost, he was immediately reminded of the friends in the service who had lost limbs. He knew he had to give Ghost a home and a life that the puppy could only dream of. 

The connection between the two was instant, and they became inseparable. Ghost’s new family included a kitten, and although introducing a puppy and a kitten can be nerve-wracking, the two became fast friends and now play together every day. 

Ghost’s story spread throughout the community, and he even became a popular visitor at the local dance studio, where he was adored by the dancers. The plan for Ghost is to become a service dog and visit places like the VA to inspire senior veterans. He will serve as living proof that life can go on after loss and that anything is possible with determination and a positive attitude. Ghost’s journey has just begun, but his impact on others is already immeasurable. 

Ghost’s story is a dedication to the resilience of both animals and humans. From being on the brink of death to becoming an inspiration for others, Ghost has shown that even the most difficult circumstances can be overcome. His tale is a reminder that there’s no such thing as a ‘broken dog.’ Please consider fostering or adopting a pet with special needs. They’ll love you forever!

A compassionate woman noticed the puppies when they tried to cross the road and immediately rushed to their rescue. She quickly contacted MaeDay Rescue, a rescue service and help was on its way to save these young four legged creatures. 

The hungry pups happily cooperated with their rescuers. Soon found themselves comfortably settled in the seat of a car ready to be taken to safety where they could recover. "They were both very submissive which made it easy for us to pick them up " shared a representative from MaeDay Rescue with The Dodo. 

"You could tell they were scared but knew that they would be safe in the car " he added. 

Out of harms way Kona and Oscar (the names given to these puppies) were able to fully relax, allowing their unique personalities to shine through. "Kona was a bit more calm and even gave us kisses " mentioned the representative, from the rescue service."Oscar, the mischievous pup was always, up to something " he explained." Both of them are incredibly adorable and intelligent!" he added enthusiastically. 

After their ordeal the puppies recovered quickly. Returned to their selves making them perfect candidates for adoption. All they needed was a loving family to call their own. Kona was the one to find her home. "This sweet girl will never be abandoned again " the rescue service shared on Instagram. "Her new family adores her. Has already showered her with love!" they continued happily. After Oscar also found his family. "He is absolutely smitten with his brother in his home " MaeDay Rescue announced in another Instagram post. 

"It's truly the place for him. We are delighted to have played a part, in his happy ending!" they expressed with joy. 

Although their story began in a situation it is evident that these brothers will never have to worry about surviving again. They have gone from living on the streets to enjoying the comforts of a loving home without a doubt. Watch this heartwarming video of Oscars rescue:

Fortunately, he chose the right home. The person who saw him did not banish him. The person was a woman and she took him and called him Solovino, which means “he who came alone” in Spanish. He stayed at his makeshift house for days. The woman contacted a dog rescue group, that takes the animal and rehome them, it called Rocket Dog Rescue. Which is located in San Francisco. The good dog was sent to a foster home, but unfortunately, he forced to foster to various homes for more than a year as his first foster placement didn’t last long. 

Carol Messina heard about Solovino’s story, she directly fell in love with him and she decided to adopt him. Messina shortened his name to solo, and she wanted to give him so happy life, but it was clear that Solo still did not trust in humans in general, and especially in Messina Messina said that he was so shy when he came to live with her, he was also trying to keep his tail between his legs, and he was non-reactive to cats, people, and dogs. It took so long time, then Messina discovered that Solo had a hearing weakness, and some dental problems. So, she decided to make some preparing to his teeth. 

He is now becoming so happy, and he also had a nice best friend in the neighborhood, a nice dog, Bailey. Messina bought a ”Deaf dog”, a vest to let people know that the dog is deaf, she helps him so much, and he is now so happy with his new family. That day, with all his courage and a level of confidence you could envy him for, this little guy just waltzed onto a naval base and… … found a hooman that would take care of him! As simple as that! Griffon Decided He Doesn’t Want The Life Of A Stray So, what does Griffin do? He walks onto a naval base and picks himself a hooman. Learn from his example! This good boi just walked in and decided he wanted an owner. 

The stray life was no good for him and he wanted a change. Born and raised on the streets, this 6-month-old pupper knew that street life wasn’t for him. It was too rough for Griffin’s kind soul. 

Enter the scene, one U.S. naval base overseas, one U.S. Naval Commander, and the rest of his companions at the base. When the Commander saw Griffin approaching him, he knew the pup was destined to wander inside their base. You don’t get to see many dogs just entering a military facility every day. 

When the rumor spread that there was a puppy on the base, everyone went nuts. They all wanted to meet the little guy that had so much courage to enter the facility with so many big, mighty guys. The army suits and the big guns didn’t scare little Griffin. He won their hearts, knocked them out of their military boots, and made himself a tiny hero. The Commander, who wanted to stay anonymous, said he doesn’t want to leave Griffin behind. 

Originally from Maryland, this brave soldier has a wife and kids who were beyond ecstatic to have a pup like Griffin. Little Griffin became family. Little Griffin became a beam of light in everyone’s daily life. And, little Griffin made his wish come true: he got himself the hooman he deserved. Thanks to support and donations to Paws of War, the non-profit organization that provides service dogs to veterans, Griffin was able to move from the base to Maryland, into his new family home. 

He was reunited with his Commander, the first person he laid eyes on, and the first hooman being who understood how precious Griffin really is. Today, Griffin serves and protects his family, just the way his hooman daddy does.

She was rescued in the nick of time. Her organs had begun to shut down. As you can see from her face, she is in pain, weak and afraid. Every bone on her body painfully showed. Angel’s body wasn’t just shutting down but so was she. Being unloved and mistreated for this long had really broken her down. But that was all about to change– now that she was in the care of loving people. Angel’s body wasn’t just shutting down but so was she. But that was all about to change– now that she was in the care of loving people. Each day, Angel improved. As Rescue From The Hart says in their video, “We lent her our strength, until one day she found her own,” is so profound. But as you will see, they were spot on! Angel took their lead. 

They saw positivity in their eyes and believed them when they told her that she is now loved and will be okay. And then… she stood up all on her own! Do you know how incredible that is?! With a steady diet and continued medical care, Angel gained weight. Her body was no longer weak. 

She looked so healthy and was beginning to understand what it meant to be a dog. She made friends at her foster home and then Angel received the best news possible– Angel found a forever home! While we do understand the desire to remain blissfully unaware of animal abuse is sometimes easier, it’s not the answer. 

When you love animals to the core, fighting for their well-being is truly the epitome of compassion. Getting stories out there, like Angel’s, is how rescue groups survive. They operate on donations from animal lovers like us. It’s not just about giving money. 

It’s also about sharing stories like Angel’s so people can see exactly what happens when rescuers do their job when they have the resources they need. Moore picked up the dog and gave her a ride to the shelter — and the two started to form a special bond. “Trooper Moore and the dog seemed to be a perfect match,” MSP wrote on Twitter. 

When the pair arrived at Antrim County Animal Shelter, Moore wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet. Sensing that fate brought them together, she filled out an application to adopt the sweet dog herself. She named the dog Rosie and gave her a forever home — a sweet happy ending to this story.

MSP Seventh District said that Rosie was part of a litter of dogs that their canine teams had been searching for, and that she was one of “numerous dogs” abandoned in the area lately. The department encouraged people to help out by adopting other available shelter dogs.
