We have all seen rescue stories and dogs that are close to visiting the Rainbow Bridge. They always touch our hearts and this one is no different. Please meet Sophiane and Hippo, this is their story.
Even though this homeless dog was beyond help, Sophiane Nacer still wanted to give him the finest ‘end of days’ possible.
She promised Hippo, an old stray with tumors all over his body, that after he left this world, he would only feel love.
“Even if it was just for a day,” Sophiane, the 19-year-old founder of Cayleb’s Kindred Senior Dog Rescue, told TODAY, Hippo was going to have the best last day ever.
Hippo was staying at the shelter for five days before being adopted by Sohphiane.
The dog’s skin was sensitive to the touch because he was in so much discomfort. Because Hippo was in so much agony, Sophiane wasn’t sure if he could feel anything at all.
She was convinced when she saw his tail wag. The sick dog still possessed hope. Before he departed this world, he fought to experience love and pleasure.
Sophiane took Hippo to Starbucks and purchased him a Puppuccino, the chain’s secret menu item that dogs go crazy for, which is simply a cup filled with delectable whipped cream.
On the following day, Hippo was still in high spirits, so Sophiane took him to a dog park where he could have some fun. He loved every minute of it! But then he had something to tell Sophiane.
The old dog, while weary and hopeful, had some news to share with his new favorite companion. He was prepared to depart. He was overjoyed he got the chance to spend time with Sophiane, but he was fatigued and in agony, and it was time to say goodbye.
After the dog park, Sophiane had a Veterinary Euthanasia Specialist come to her home. The vet specialist gave him a roasted chicken filled with sedatives during his last meal. He ate his final dinner while sitting next to Sophiane as comfortably as possible, then drifted into an easygoing permanent sleep.
The video below is going to touch your heart and be sure to watch it to the very end!
Life sure would be boring if we didn’t have friends who were by our side every step of the way.
Some friends have two legs, and some have four as well as a whole lot of fur on their bodies.
Gonzalez decided to put up a photo of her mother for remembrance, and as soon as the pup saw it, she refused to leave its side.
“She is very sad. She approaches the photo, takes the ball to her grandmother, and sits waiting for her to throw it to her,” Gonzalez said.
González made sure to comfort Greka as much as she could, and with that, she managed to comfort herself as well.
“I feel my mother with me every time I hug Greka or every time she brings me her ball. Her love for my mother has kept us together to endure this very difficult process,” she added.
But, regardless of their extra feet, these friends can make our lives so much better.
Delvia González is a witness to this fact, as a pup became her most treasured best friend.
Best Friends Forever
Greka is a very sweet Pit Bull who happily lives with her mom, Delvia Gonzalez.
She, just like all other dogs, loves spending time having fun playdates, especially when they involve her favorite hoomans.
Even though she loves all the hoomans she meets in her life, there is one specific person who occupies a special place in her heart.
Since Gonzalez had to go to work every day, somebody had to take care of Greka, and luckily, she had the perfect person for the job.
González’s mom, a 70-year-old woman also named Delvia, decided to be Greka’s babysitter and it was the best decision she ever made.
“They kept each other company and always spent time together, spending their time playing fetch with the ball, and when they got tired, they’d start watching TV together,” González told The Dodo.
The two loved having fun together, and whenever Gonzalez wouldn’t feel too well, Greka would stay by her side until she felt better.
“My mother had diabetes, and because of that, her vision was affected. She could hardly see, so Greka was a support for her. When my mother felt bad or when she had a change in her glucose levels, Greka always told me, and she stayed by her side. She always laid at her feet wherever she was,” González said.
Unfortunate News
The pup remained by her babysitter’s side to the very end since, after being admitted to the hospital, Gonzalez passed away.
“Greka was the first to enter the emergency room. She was very desperate and worried about her grandmother. We wanted Greka to know that her grandmother would not return, and for that reason, the day we buried her, we took Greka to say goodbye. We brought her close to her coffin. She cried a lot. She trembled with sadness, but she understood that her grandmother was resting in peace,” she added.
True friends may be apart in distance, but they will always carry each other in their hearts. This can clearly be seen in a video Gonzalez shared on TikTok.

But, their mother and grandmother are still with them, and that was proven to them on their recent trip to the beach.
Love is incredible. It doesn’t matter if it’s between two humans or between a pet and its owner, love has the power to immortalize.
Gonzalez will always be by their side, looking over them and making sure they always have a smile on their face.

A heartwarming story unfolded when a Detroit Police Department officer rescued a helpless Pit Bull left stranded on a porch in the freezing cold.
Officer Eric McCombs became a hero with his heartwarming act of compassion after he, without hesitation, saved this poor soul from her icy predicament.
It’s genuinely heartbreaking to think that someone could leave such a sweet creature to suffer in the freezing cold, which is sadly a common occurrence in the Detroit area.
Fortunately, passionate individuals like officer McCombs ensure that tales of rescue and warmth persist, even in the midst of such challenging circumstances.
Stranded Pit Bull In -20° Windchill
Officer McCombs was on patrol in the middle of the night when he spotted a poor dog out in the freezing cold stuck on a chain which had become entangled on a porch.
As a huge dog lover, this officer didn’t even think twice about saving this poor girl.
“When I went up to her, I was like, ‘This can’t be.’ I didn’t even think, I was just like, ‘I need to rescue this dog’,” officer McCombs told The Dodo.
On that particular night in Detroit, the windchill dropped to -20 degrees – an extremely harsh and cold environment for a dog to be exposed to outdoors continuously.
“I was angry because it was intentional. Who could do this? Somebody had the thought of, ‘I’m gonna chain this dog to a porch and leave her there while she’s completely malnourished,” officer McCombs said.
The poor dog was not just freezing, but she was also very hungry. She eagerly ate the treats they offered her, highlighting the desperate need for nourishment and warmth.
Just by looking at her, it was evident that she hadn’t had anything to eat in a considerable amount of time.
As they released her from the porch, she was both petrified and happy to be finally free. She quickly jumped in the police vehicle.
“She had frostbite on the tips of her ears. My partner and I got her in the car, and then we were just like, ‘What do we do from here?’ We ended up having to take her to an animal shelter,” McCombs said.
They ended up bringing the dog to Detroit Animal Care and Control.
Yet, one of the officers couldn’t shake the thoughts of her from his mind.
Happy Beginnings
Throughout her stay at the shelter, Officer McCombs couldn’t help but ponder how she deserved more than just a confined kennel crate.
She deserved to have a good life. But, who was going to provide her that?
It didn’t take long for officer McCombs to figure out that he had fallen in love with this sweet little girl – later named Sweet Pea – and he decided to officially adopt her.
He reached out to Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue for help, and this was what they shared in their Facebook post:
“One of the officers couldn’t stop thinking about her, so he reached out to us, and today we went and pulled her. We are going to be taking care of all of her medical needs, and then she will be adopted by her hero… DPD Officer McCombs!”
Eric already had one dog [Homer], but deep down, he knew he had to save this little girl. “It was a special moment. Double the food, double the vet, double whatever. I had to,” McCombs said.
When she first arrived at her new home, Sweet Pea didn’t know how to be an indoor dog. She wouldn’t jump on the couch or the bed, or even eat peanut butter.
She just needed some time, and that’s exactly what she got.
Soon, Sweet Pea learned to embrace the joys of her newfound life, reveling in the love and care that surrounded her.
Now, she’s loving her new dream life, with her past life on the streets of Detroit fading into a distant memory.
Truly A Hero
Sweet Pea is not the only dog officer McCombs has rescued from the streets of Detroit.
He actually rescues dogs everywhere he goes, serving as a true beacon of hope for many neglected and abandoned dogs.
“Why not rescue Pit Bulls and serve as a police officer simultaneously?” he questioned, and I echo the sentiment – why not, indeed?
Thank you, Officer Eric McCombs, for all that you’ve done for these innocent furry beings.
Your compassion and dedication make a significant difference in their lives.
“We are so proud to have Officer McCombs as a part of our team and thankful that he is an officer that goes above and beyond to help the voiceless animals that need a hero,” Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue said.
