Paul Barton has spent years at the shelter and is no stranger to these magnificent creatures.
He first became involved with Elephants World after meeting and marrying the sanctuary’s owner, Khwan, while on vacation.
Since then, the Englishman has been entertaining animals, telling Coconuts Bangkok that he “…love[s] elephants and liked the sound of the location being a retirement sanctuary for aged, crippled, disabled logging and street elephants.”
Barton also enjoys recording films of his encounters with these magnificent creatures to his YouTube account, and Amphan makes a special cameo. The elephant is characterized as kind, blind in one eye, and barely able to see through the other in the video caption. Despite this, she is completely capable of hearing, so Barton takes her to his piano for a special performance.
As soon as she hears Barton’s first notes, the sweet-natured elephant pauses. Her ears start fluttering in delight, and anyone can see that she is at ease. She also has a slight wobble in her body as she stands close to the piano, listening to the soothing music.
The camera then records something quite incredible: a flood of tears streaming from her eye. Paul Barton’s song appears to have impacted her, and her emotions have run wild.
The film ends with a touching gesture between Barton and Amphan, in which he bends his head and rubs her trunk to express his gratitude.
The serene animal stands stoically among the jungle foliage, knowing she is now safe and happy in the refuge, and she is even more comfortable thanks to Paul Barton’s music, proving the old adage that “music soothes the savage beast.”
